International Conference on Financing for Development in 2002: Ecumenical team gives priority to "transformation of the international financial system" (24.10.01)

The ecumenical community approaches the issues to be addressed in the International Conference on Financing for Development with a particular understanding of the term "development" - an understanding that has evolved and deepened over several decades. For the ecumenical community, justice is the heart of the matter.

The World Council of Churches(WCC) has, since its inception 54 years ago, emphasized the importance of global justice and the equitable sharing of resources as essential prerequisites for human development.

The WCC has also advocated appropriate public and non-governmental policies which will be a real benefit to people in poverty.

The WCC, the Lutheran World Federation, other churches and church-related organisations have collaborated in forming an Ecumenical Team which has attended the succession of United Nations Preparatory Committees for the International Conference. Partners include the Canadian Council of Churches, the General Board of Church and Society of the United Methodist Church (USA), and the Roman Catholic religious order, Sisters of Mercy.
