People with disabilities have been on the WCC's agenda for a long time. At the Faith & Order Commission meeting in Louvain, Belgium in 1971, for example, it was recognised that "the unity of the church and the unity of mankind" could not be achieved without the participation of people with disabilities. Subsequently, the WCC embarked on efforts to mainstream disability concerns within its work. The Ecumenical Disability Advocates Network - EDAN - was formed in Harare, Zimbabwe, during the WCC's eighth assembly and formally launched in Nairobi during the first-ever global ecumenical consultation for and by people with disabilities. |
