The Hidden Shame of the Church Sexual Abuse of Children and the Church by Ron O'Grady Since founding ECPAT (End Child Prostitution in Asian Tourism), an international organisation working to end child prostitution and pornography, in 1991, the author has sadly come to recognise that church leaders and representatives are not exempt from involvement in the sexual abuse of children. Although working in a secular and apolitical org-anisation, the author's Christian belief and experience have informed this study of a deeply disturbing phenomenon. He seeks, through unsensational language, to expose the truth of the church's involvement and by so doing to start the search for solutions. Ron O'Grady founded ECPAT in 1991 . The organisation works to end child prostitution, pornography and trafficking in children. ECPAT now operates in 60 countries. Risk Book Series, WCC Publications, Geneva, Price: approx. The vital role of communication in achieving reconciliation is undeniable. But how do we communicate? Amazingly, in our high-tech world the question is as valid as ever, as the communities caught up in conflict, prejudice and exploitation will testify. Communication and Reconciliation explores this theme through a range of experiences. The determination of the Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo in Argentina not to be silenced; the experience of Estonia where re-establishing the mother tongue is helping to rebuild the country and interethnic relations following the collapse of the Soviet Union; and the lessons to be learned by the churches in Canada from the First Nations peoples' belief in the "spirit of community", are some of the stories in this uplifting exploration of how we create "a culture of dialogue" and in turn, reconciliation, which is at the heart of the Christian message. Philip Lee is a senior staff member of the World Association for Christian Communication, London, UK. Lead us not into Temptation is a document prepared by an ecumenical group composed of theologians, economists, financial experts, sociologists and ecologists. This document highlights essential areas for consideration by churches as they engage themselves in responding to the policies of the World Bank, the IMF and the challenges of globalisation. As the wind of globalisation blows, some churches are strong enough to meet the challenge of the global forces while others are in a state of powerlessness and unable to make a fresh critical review of economic and social questions that confront us today. The aim of the document is, therefore, to serve as a point of reference on how churches can deal with the ongoing relationships being created between the World Bank and the churches. This publication was announced in the issue no. 18 of Echoes. It is now ready and can be ordered from the JPC team. PUBLICATIONS OF INTEREST
War Prevention Works In the hills above Tetovo, Macedonia, an uneasy ceasefire threatens to unravel at any minute. In Burundi, Hutu-Tutsi co-existence is punctuated by Hutu-Tutsi violence. In Colombia, local communities are caught in the ongoing conflict between the government and the FARC. In violent conflicts around the world, the same question is always heard: What can be done? While the eyes of the world look to politicians and diplomats to halt the bloodshed, away from the glare of the world's media, thousands of ordinary people are doing quite extraordinary things: they are working to prevent violence, contain conflicts and end wars. War Prevention Works, published by Oxford Research Group tells their story. Covering over 30 conflicts ranging from inter-community disputes to inter-state wars and dating from 1946 to the present day these powerful stories, some of which are being told here for the first time, show what ordinary people, non-governmental organisations, church groups and many others are able to achieve. War Prevention Works is a valuable resource for practitioners, decision makers, students and activists alike.

His new collection of essays, The Future in the Balance, clearly and eloquently explains the true causes of the financial crisis - the institutions that advocated free market economies based on the principles of liberalisation, deregulation, and privatisation. Bello tells the truth about the World Trade Organisation, International Monetary Fund and the World Bank, and their grip on the Third-World. He shatters the myths of development as prescribed by these institutions and offers the possibility of another world based on fairness and justice.
