In the context of the 58th session of the United Nations Human Rights Commission currently underway in Geneva, Dr José Ramos Horta, Nobel Peace Prize laureate and senior minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of the Second Transitional Government of East Timor, will address Geneva-based non-governmental organisations about the situation in East Timor. Wednesday, 20 March, 18:30 hrs This meeting is hosted by the International Service for Human Rights (ISHR) and the International Relations Team of the World Council of Churches (WCC). The meeting will be conducted in English, and is open to the public.
The World Council of Churches is a fellowship of churches, now 342, in more than 100 countries in all continents from virtually all Christian traditions. The Roman Catholic Church is not a member church but works cooperatively with the WCC. The highest governing body is the assembly, which meets approximately every seven years. The WCC was formally inaugurated in 1948 in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Its staff is headed by general secretary Konrad Raiser from the Evangelical Church in Germany. |
